Marble is a type of metamorphic rock which is characterized by swirls of color from impurities and the ability to take a very high polish. This stone has been used for thousands of years in art and architecture, and it continues to be very popular today in applications ranging from garden paving stones to mantles. High quality marble is typically very costly, and many people associate marble with luxurious design as a result. What is limestone?

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate: CaCO3). Like most other sedimentary rocks, limestone are composed of grains; however, most grains in limestone grains are skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. Other carbonate grains comprising limestone are ooids, peloids, intraclasts, and extraclasts. Some limestones do not consist of grains at all and are formed completely by the chemical precipitation of calcite or aragonite. i.e. travertine. It comes in slabs and tiles with different surface finishes: flamed, honed, polished and tumbled. Requires sealing.

 What is slate?

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. The result is a foliated rock in which the foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering. Slate is frequently grey in color, especially when seen en masse covering roofs.

Slate flooring is a natural and durable material that can be used to create intricate and easy to maintain floor designs. The material can be shaped into tiles and installed in a manner that is very similar to that of ceramic tile, or formed into larger sections to create a more interesting rough hewn pattern for the floor. Available in a variety of colors, slate flooring is an ideal option for high traffic areas, since the floor will show little signs of wear even after a number of years.

What is granite?

A very hard natural igneous rock formation of visibly crystalline texture formed essentially of quartz and orthoclase or micro line. Granite’s characteristics: highly durable, resistant to abrasions, scratches and heat. Available in hundreds of colours, patterns and texture.

Granite is one of the most popular building materials. It has been used for thousands of years in both interior and exterior applications. Granite dimension stone is used in buildings, bridges, paving, monuments and many other exterior projects. Indoors, polished granite slabs and tiles are used in countertops, tile floors, stair treads and many other design elements. Granite is a prestige material, used in projects to produce impressions of elegance and quality. Some interesting uses of granite are shown below. Perfect for kitchen countertops as well as flooring, window sills, shower surrounds, islands, fireplaces and bar tops.

What is ceramic tile?

A mixture of clays, molded into a shape and fired at high temperatures – resulting in a hard body. Ceramic tiles are tiles which are made from ceramic materials like earthenware and porcelain. Tiles are simply flat slabs of material which can be used in a range of applications, including flooring, countertops, roofing, walls, and showers. There are numerous styles of ceramic tiles available, from terra-cotta roofing tiles used in Mission-style architecture to delicate hand-painted porcelain tiles intended for ornamental splashbacks in kitchens

What are porcelain tiles?

Porcelain tiles are ceramic tiles with a water absorption rate of less than 0.5 percent that are used to cover floors and walls. They can either be unglazed or glazed. Porcelain Tile is also a very common trend in tile installation. There are many different styles of porcelain tiles on the market and they have proved to outperform ceramic tile in durability and looks.
